Pre-Op

How far ahead to book LASIK in Colombia

Four to eight weeks from first message to surgery is the comfortable range. Under three is possible for soft-lens wearers. Under two is a scramble.

The calendar for a Colombian LASIK trip is not set by the clinic's availability. It is set by the slowest of four things: your contact lens break, the quote round trip, the deposit, and flights. Line them up and the total is the lead time you need.

The lead-time stack

From first message to surgery day, by step

Typical durations in days. Steps overlap; the contact lens break usually runs longest.

Inquiry → quote
1–5
Quote → deposit paid
1–7
Contact lens break (soft)
7–21
Contact lens break (rigid)
28–60
Deposit → surgery slot

Flights booked → departure

Ranges are planning guidance drawn from typical clinic scheduling and pre-op protocols, not a guarantee of availability.

Read it top to bottom as a critical path. For a soft-lens wearer who sends a complete inquiry, the quote comes back within a few days, the deposit goes out the same week, and the lens break of two to three weeks becomes the binding constraint. Surgery three to four weeks after the first message is realistic. For a rigid-lens wearer the break alone is a month or more, and the surgeon may want a repeat topography, so plan on six to ten weeks.

Which slot fills first

Surgery. Diagnostic exams can be scheduled almost any weekday; laser suite time is booked in blocks and shared across the surgeon's own patients. When you give the coordinator a travel window, they look for a surgery morning inside it, then place the exam the working day before. If you are told "the surgeon operates Tuesdays and Thursdays," build the trip around that day rather than asking for a Monday.

That also means a request for a specific single date is the hardest thing to satisfy. A ten-day window with a preferred city gives the coordinator room to find a pairing that works.

Seasons and dates that slow things down

Earliest and latest

The earliest realistic booking

Two to three weeks from first message, if all of the following are true: you wear soft lenses or none, you send the full packet on day one, you pay the deposit within a day of the quote, you are flexible between Medellín and Bogotá, and you can book flights at short notice. Remove any one of those and add a week.

The latest sensible booking

There is no upper limit on holding a date, but there are two things that go stale: the price on the quote and your prescription. Most quotes are valid for a fixed period; ask for the price to be held with the deposit, or accept that you will re-confirm it later. A prescription older than about a year at exam time may prompt the surgeon to re-check stability, which a single-trip plan can absorb but is better avoided by getting a fresh refraction a couple of months before you travel.

A working timeline for a soft-lens wearer

Rigid-lens wearers: shift everything after week 1 out by three to six weeks and expect the clinic to ask for a second topography.

The sentence to send when you are ready: "I can travel between [date] and [date], I wear [lens type], my last day in contacts can be [date], and I would like the earliest surgery slot inside that window." A coordinator can build the whole trip from that.

Once the dates are held, the money follows. Deposits and payment covers the methods and the refund terms to get in writing.

Quick answers

What is the fastest realistic timeline?

About two to three weeks if you wear soft lenses (or none), send the full packet on day one, pay the deposit within a day or two of the quote, and are flexible on city. The contact lens break, not the clinic, is the floor.

Can I book six months out?

Yes, and clinics will hold a date. Ask whether the quoted price holds for that long; many quotes are valid for 30 to 90 days, so you may re-confirm the price closer to the date. Your prescription also needs to still be current at the exam.

Which fills first, the exam or the surgery slot?

Surgery. Laser suite time is the scarce resource; diagnostic exams are easier to fit in. The coordinator will usually find the surgery date first and put the exam the day before.

Ready to lock a date?

Send your prescription, travel window and city preference. You get an exam slot, a surgery slot and an itemised quote back, not a sales call.
